1. Core Privacy Principle: Zero Data Collection
We do not collect, store, transmit, or sell your personal data.
PromptCat operates as a standalone, local-first utility. We do not have servers to store your prompts, usage history, or browsing behavior. All data generated by the Extension resides exclusively on your local device.
2. Data Storage and Retention
- Local Storage: All user-generated content (including saved prompts, folders, tags, and settings) is stored locally within your Chrome browser using the
chrome.storage.localAPI. - No Cloud Sync: We do not sync your data to any external cloud servers managed by the developer.
- Data Life Cycle: Your data remains on your device indefinitely until you manually delete it or uninstall the Extension. Uninstalling the Extension will permanently remove all locally stored data.
3. Permissions Usage & Justification
To function correctly, PromptCat requires specific permissions. We use these permissions strictly for the purposes described below:
activeTab(Core Functionality):- Purpose: To identify the active text input field on the current webpage and insert the prompt selected by the user.
- Privacy Scope: This permission is granted only when you explicitly trigger the Extension (via the toolbar icon or keyboard shortcut). It does not allow the Extension to run in the background or monitor your browsing history.
scripting:- Purpose: To technically execute the text insertion command.
- Privacy Scope: Scripts are injected dynamically only upon your request to paste text. No persistent scripts are used to track user activity.
sidePanel:- Purpose: To display the prompt library interface alongside your web browsing workflow without obstructing page content.
storage:- Purpose: To save your custom prompts and preferences locally on your device.
contextMenus:- Purpose: To provide a "Save to PromptCat" shortcut in the right-click menu.
- Privacy Scope: We only process the specific text string you highlight and choose to save. We do not read other page content.
- Host Permissions (e.g., api.openai.com):
- Purpose: Only if applicable. If you choose to use features that communicate directly with AI providers (like OpenAI), the Extension connects directly from your browser to the AI provider's API.
- Privacy Scope: Your API Keys and data are sent directly to the respective AI provider. They do not pass through any servers owned by the PromptCat developer.
4. Third-Party Services
- AI Providers: If you use the Extension to interact with third-party AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, OpenAI API), your interactions are subject to the privacy policies of those respective platforms. PromptCat acts solely as a bridge to facilitate text entry or API calls.
- No Analytics: We do not use third-party analytics tools (such as Google Analytics or Mixpanel) to track extension usage.
5. Data Security
Because all data is stored locally on your device, the security of your data relies on the security of your local computer and browser. We recommend keeping your browser updated to the latest version to ensure chrome.storage is secure.
